Book Review: Choosing Happy by Samatha Harris

Hey my lovelies, this weeks book review is Choosing Happy by Samatha Harris, I received this from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review on the Choosing Happy Blog Tour. This is the sequel to Somewhere in Between, but can be read separately as a standalone.

Title: Choosing Happy
Author: Samatha Harris
Publisher: Limitless Publishing
Pub. Date: September 20th 2016
Date Read:   September 2016
Pages: 336
Goodreads Summary: Madison Buchanan’s life has imploded… Her husband left her for his nineteen-year-old intern, leaving her alone and faced with starting over in her forties. With the help of her feisty best friend, Madison reinvents herself, armed with a new look and open to new possibilities.
Sean Taylor is gorgeous, fun, and young—very young… He hasn’t had the best of luck. Sean’s track record with women is less than stellar, but when he walks into The Den one day, he just can’t help but be captivated by a dark haired beauty with the sad eyes and killer legs. She’s a little older, but he doesn’t discriminate. More than anything, he wants to be the one to make her smile. Sean personifies the only thing that has eluded Madison all of her life—joy… It was meant to be a fling, something fun, with no strings and zero drama, but Sean wants something more, and Madison is just not ready. She’s lived by the rules her family, her friends, even her boss have laid out for her, but her new life is not what she expected. Being with Sean opens feelings she never thought she’d experience. The demands of her family and her job throw her boring, simple life into chaos, and Sean is no exception… Madison is left with a choice. Give in to the expectations of the world around her—or choose to follow her heart and be happy. But choosing happy is so much harder than it seems.

Overview

Choosing Happy is the second book in the Madison Square series, however it is one of them spin off books where you don't have to read the first book to understand the second, as I assume it does have some of the characters from the last one, but follows a side characters story. Please note that I have not read the first book in this series (yet), however I will be doing this soon, as I really liked Alex and Drews dynamics.

Madison, a newly divorced woman in her early 40's, who is taking her husband leaving her for a much younger woman hard, is one of our main characters and our other one is Sean, who is quite a few years younger than Madison. I don't tend to read a lot of adult books, and have certainly not read a book where the female is older than the male, which was a nice change. After Madison receives a makeover completely revamping her style, she begins to make some dramatic changes to her life. And with the undeniable attraction, begins a relationship with a younger man. There was quite a bit of internal debate in Madisons point of view chapters, which made Madison feel and seem more real and human, as she honestly didn't know what to do, as one part of her obviously wanted to be with Sean and the other part debated that he wasn't what she needed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I really enjoyed the book and will definitely be checking out the first book in the series soon, as I really enjoyed Samathas' writing style

Recommend...

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the first book Somewhere In Between and to anyone who likes romance, or wants to read a book when it is the woman who is the (slightly) older one in the relationship.

Author Bio

Samatha “Sam” Harris lives near Baltimore, Maryland with her husband David and daughter Ava. Born in Florida, she migrated north which most people agree was a little backwards. She has been an artist all of her life, a Tattoo Artist for more than ten years, and a storyteller since she was a kid.
Sam has a slightly unhealthy love for Frank Sinatra, classic movies, and Jazz and Blues music, but her first love will always be reading. From Romance, to Thrillers, to Historical Fiction and everything in between, she loves to become a part of the story. As a writer she tells the stories that she would want to read.

Book Review: Mirror Image by Michele Pariza Wacek

Hey my lovelies, today's book review is of Mirror Image by Michele Pariza Wacek, which was provided to me thanks to Worldwind Book Tours and Michele Pariza Wacek.

Title: Mirror Image
Author: Michele Pariza Wacek
Publisher: Love-Based Publishing
Pub. Date: May 28th 2016
Date Read: Wednesday 8th June 2016
Pages: 272
Rating:4/5 stars
Goodreads Summary: Which would be worse, knowing that your dead sister has come back to life and is now a serial killer or that someone else is the killer….and that person is you? Six months after Linda's sister Elizabeth killed herself, Linda has finally gotten her life back to some semblance of normalcy. Until a killer appears who is stalking men ... a killer who resembles Elizabeth ... a killer who seems somehow familiar to Linda.  And, to make matters worse, Steve, her old high school crush and now a detective, is assigned to this case. He's asking Linda all sorts of questions, questions Linda couldn't possibly have an answer to. There's no reason for him to be investigating Linda. She couldn't possibly have anything to do with this. Could she?

Mirror Image follows our main character Linda, who is not exactly having the good life she hoped for. She came from an abusive home, and her sister, Elizabeth committed suicide earlier this year, leaving no body behind. Due to her sister’s death, part of her feels guilt for never noticing anything wrong, and also relief due to the trials and tribulations that she put her through as both a child and an adult. Due to all of this Linda’s health is on a downward spiral, causing her to significantly lose weight and for her mental health to decrease. Which cause her to have blackouts, where hours disappear, causing her to have no idea where she has been or what she has done.  And when men are getting murdered in her town and she starts seeing the dead men in her nightmares, she can’t help but freak out. And when a former friend turned detective arrives back in time and starts asking questions, which Linda doesn’t want to know the answers to, she can’t help but get more stressed.

Mirror Image is not a long book, however it took me quite a while to get into it, however as soon as I was about 60% in, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. I loved the tension the book created, as it even left me guessing on what the genre really was. The writing was overall good, and I thought the point of view change on the chapters was quite refreshing, as the book was predominately in Linda’s point of view, however every few chapters there would be a character from different points in Elizabeth and Linda’s life, giving further insight into their lives and what Elizabeth really was like as a child. And another point is that I did not guess the plot twist at the very end, which recently I have been doing an awful lot of.  One of the only negatives I have for this book is that there was some unanswered questions at the end, these could be simply due to me missing the part or it was meant to be left open.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book as I really enjoyed the writing and hopefully I shall be reading more of Michele Pariza Wacek's books in the future.

About the Author

When Michele was 3 years old, she taught herself to read because she wanted to write stories so badly.
As you can imagine, writing has been a driving passion throughout her life. She became a professional copywriter (which is writing promotional materials for businesses), which led to her founding a copywriting and marketing company that serves clients all over the world.
Along with being a copywriter, she also writes novels (in fact, she just published her first novel, a psychological thriller/suspense/mystery called “The Stolen Twin” and her second novel “Mirror Image'” is set to be published in May 2016) plus, she is also the author of the “Love-Based Copy” books, which are a part of the “Love-Based Business” series and cover both business and personal development.
She holds a double major in English and Communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Currently she lives in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona with her husband Paul and her border collie Nick and southern squirrel hunter Cassie.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes psychological thrillers with hints of the supernatural and a whole lot of suspense.

Book Review: Memories of a mad man by Don Spector

Hey my lovelies, today's review is of Memories of a Mad Man by Don Spector, which was provided to me for free thanks to World Wind Tours and Don Spector. Memories of a Mad Man is a memoir following Dons life in the marketing world in the 60's and 70's. To be quite honest I have never been a particularly big fan of memoirs and biography's, but I really enjoyed this one.

Title: Memories of a Mad Man
Author: Don Spector
Publisher: N/A
Pub. Date: January 30th 2016
Date Read: Tuesday 18th April 2016
Pages: 178
Rating:4.5/5 stars
Goodreads Summary: Mad Men. Don Spector didn’t just watch them on television. He was one of them.
Starting in a Madison Avenue ad agency in the ‘60’s, he actually lived the life captured in the TV show. In "Memories of a Mad Man" he shares with us an unforgettable era filled with humor, brilliance, wonderful heroes and big, bad villains.
The funny and fascinating stories he tells uncover the reality of the ad world behind the show.
• What was it like dealing with celebrities of the era?
• How did the advent of computers spoil one of the greatest boondoggles that Mad Men—and Mad Women—enjoyed?
• The Three Martini Lunch. True or false?
• What's the real truth about truth in advertising?
The book answers these and many more intriguing questions in this unique look into a unique profession.

Don Spector has a good voice, I found myself enraptured in the book reading page after page, and with the added bonus of the pictures dotted through out the novel. The book was also well written with me not only wanting to find out more about his life, but wanting to find out what happened to these people that he mentioned. Not only was it entertaining

As a business student myself reading how advertising was done was incredibly informative to me and definitely found me comparing myself how things have changed due to modern advancements.

The only negative I found was that due to me being english, and not knowledgeable of 60's/70's american radio presenters and actors, as I simply did not know who some of the people he mentioned were, so I did have to keep leaving the book in order to google who the people were at the time and who they went on to be. But apart from that it was all good.

About Don Spector

Starting as a junior copywriter in a Madison Avenue ad agency in the ‘60s, Don Spector qualifies as a genuine Mad Man. Creating advertising for the agency’s high-profile accounts like Smirnoff Vodka and Tareyton cigarettes, he began his ascent up the creative ladder in several New York agencies. His commercials and print ads for advertisers like Xerox, the Yellow Pages and Jaguar ultimately led to an offer of a key position in Los Angeles-based BBDO/West where he was soon named Creative Director.  After moving to a similar position at Foote Cone Belding/Los Angeles, he eventually started his own agency where he served until his retirement.  The advertising he created for dozens of companies like ARCO, Absolut Vodka, Bristol-Myers and S.C. Johnson won numerous awards. But, more importantly, it generated millions of dollars in sales for them.

Recommend...

I recommend this to anyone who enjoys memoirs, business students and people who wish to find out more about the advertising/marketing industry in the 60s and 70s.
